Unfortunately, this is the only campground within walking distance of the French Quarter and therefore their price reflects that. It was built on part of a parking lot of an old Target store that closed after Katrina. It is adjacent to the freeway (noise) and directly adjacent to the “projects” (welfare housing - drug dealers etc). It is gated and has 24 hour attendants. The campground is clean and reasonably well kept. The employees told us it was a bit risky walking from the park to the French Quarter due to the “projects” which is why they provide 24 hour golf cart rides between the park and the New Orleans visitor center (about 1/4 mile). However, we, like other visitors, found this to be available at the whim of the employees. Several times we found we had to walk because they would not answer the phone only to find two or three employees sitting at the desk chatting about their girlfriends or whatnot. The attitude of the employees are hit or miss. Some are friendly, most communicate through body language that customers are merely a burden. On new years they were very booked and raised their rates for that night to $169 and had no spots available. They told us we would be able to stay in the vacant lot just outside the gate and dry camp for $100/night.
